Holiday in Cambodia

Dead Kennedys

East Bay Ray's tone is surf guitar played by a punk: bright, thin and drenched in echo and reverb, never thick or saturated. The long creepy intro is clean and wet over Klaus Flouride's building bass line, then the song kicks into fast punk on a low-gain, trebly crunch. One amp setting covers it all: roll the guitar volume back for the intro and bridge, full up for the fast parts. Standard tuning.

Front of amp: Cheeky Pint (off) → TS Mini (off) · FX loop: GE-7 (on) → Spark Mini (off) → Flashback (on) → HOF (on). Guitar volume down for the intro and bridge, full up for the fast parts. Echo and reverb stay on throughout.

Marshall DSL20H Classic Gain Crunch — whole song

Channel: Classic Gain
Mode: Crunch
Tone Shift: OFF

Bright, low-gain edge of breakup. For the creepy intro and the quiet bridge, roll the guitar volume back to about 6 and it cleans up; turn it up full when the band kicks in. Less gain than you'd expect for punk: the echo needs room.

Tube Screamer Mini Bypassed

Off. It adds mids and compression, which is the opposite of Ray's thin, bright attack.

Cheeky Pint Compressor Bypassed

Off. The intro builds by getting louder; let it.

TC Spark Mini — FX Loop Bypassed

Not needed. The lines sit on top already because they're so bright.

Flashback Mini — FX Loop On — Echoplex

This is the sound of the song: Ray used a tape Echoplex. A short-to-medium echo with a few repeats makes the intro feel creepy. Pick the tape/analog mode if your Flashback has a TonePrint for it. Keep it on for the fast parts too.

Hall of Fame Mini — FX Loop On — surf

More reverb than anything else in the set. Spring mode if you have it, for the surf drip.

Boss GE-7 — FX Loop On — bright & thin

Cut the lows so the guitar keeps out of the bass's way (the bass carries the intro), and lift the upper mids for Ray's jangle.

Squier P Bass PJ pickups

The bass opens the song on its own, so it needs to be clear: a pick and a bit of bridge pickup for definition.

Bass — Ashdown Perfect Ten Squier P Bass

Clean and punchy. The intro line should sound big and ominous, not fuzzy. (Mix stays at min: it's the line-in blend, not part of your tone.)

The Riffs

Standard tuning. The intro is the bass on its own, then the drums, then Ray's echoing, eerie single-note lines with the guitar volume rolled back, getting louder and louder. When the band kicks in, turn the guitar volume up full for the fast picked riff. Roll it back for the quiet "Pol Pot" bridge.
